Herbal treatment

The conventional medical approach to Lyme disease treatment in adults is a 10 to 21-day course of the antibiotic doxycycline. However, a growing body of research shows that this treatment is insufficient, if not completely ineffective, for cases of chronic Lyme disease. Functional medicine offers a far more comprehensive approach to the antimicrobial treatment of Lyme and co-infections. One of the methods of supportive treatment of Lyme disease and co-infections is phytotherapy. It is a treatment using the health-promoting properties of herbs.

Microbial Herbs

Botanical medicines (herbal or plant based) are foundational interventions in the functional medicine approach to Lyme disease. There are many botanical protocols available for Lyme and co-infections; however, it can be confusing trying to determine which protocol and products to use. At IAH Wellness, we have extensive experience using botanical protocols for Lyme and co-infections and can create a protocol that is customized to your specific needs.

Herbalist Stephen Harrod Buhner, a pioneer in the use of botanical medicines for Lyme disease, has developed a botanical protocol that we use as a cornerstone with many of our Lyme and co-infection patients at IAH Wellness which is part of our complete LACI® protocol. With herbs, being broad spectrum, we can address multiple infections with one agent. Also, they are safer for long-term use, so we feel very comfortable using them for longer periods of time. Long-term use could be months or years, depending on the severity of the disease.

Treatment with Herbs

Effective methods of treating Lyme disease are constantly being developed. The recommended antibiotics are not always effective, and the time necessary to stay on them is very long, sometimes costly and ay the sametime harmful to the Gut system. That is why other, effective methods supporting the treatment of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases are being developed.

Active ingredients contained in herbs affect the body comprehensively. Thanks to their numerous properties, they alleviate the symptoms of Lyme and co-infections. Supporting the treatment of these diseases with herbs involves the use of various herbal compositions that have a wide range of effects, including:

  • Cleansing
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Stimulating the immune system
  • Urinators
  • Antioxidante

Some of the botanical protocols we use for the botanical treatment of Lyme and co-infections include the Buhner Protocol, the Bowden Protocol and the Byron White Protocol.
